How to read these results

Select any two of five forms. These are invented terrain surfaces, not surveyed locations. Colour and texture aid reading; they do not determine origin, climate or rock type.

Landform types

Compare the elevation and shape of mountains, hills, plateaus, plains and basins using a shared scale.

Why it happens

Elevation, relief, slope and shape describe different properties of terrain. A plateau can stand high above sea level while remaining relatively flat, and a basin is defined by its lower position relative to nearby land.

Reading the result

The five terrain samples use a shared scale for comparison; shape alone does not establish the process or rock type that formed a landscape.

A common misunderstanding

A landform’s shape tells us which single process created it.

A landscape can record several processes acting at different times. A river may occupy a valley widened by ice, while rock structure influences both erosion and slope failure. Shape provides clues, but interpreting the history also needs evidence such as sediments, rock relationships and chronology.

Mountain

A landform with substantial elevation and relief relative to its surroundings. There is no single globally accepted height separating mountains from hills.

Hill

An area of raised ground with relief above its surroundings, generally smaller than a mountain. Shape and local context matter: there is no universal height that separates the two. Contours can show its summit, slopes and relative height.

Plateau

An extensive area of elevated, relatively level ground. Rivers can dissect it into deep valleys and canyons while remnants of the high surface remain. A plateau describes broad relief rather than a particular rock type.

Plain

A broad area of relatively low relief, often but not always at low elevation. Plains can form by deposition, erosion or other processes. Flatness alone does not identify how a particular plain developed.

Basin

A low area surrounded by higher ground. A drainage basin is the land area that sends water to a particular river, lake or other outlet.

Relief

The variation in elevation within an area, often expressed as the difference between its highest and lowest points.

Canyon

A deep valley with steep sides, commonly cut by a river into elevated rock. The surrounding plateau and the canyon are different landforms. Rock resistance, uplift and changing base level all influence how the valley develops.
